Dear Guy Wooles,
I came across you website during a search on penguins. Being
a lover of these wonderful birds I found your work very interesting.
For many reasons your work hit me on many levels. Many people
do not associate with penguns of all things, secondly your
are making them out of paper and lastly my love for them.
I'm writing you to see if you might be able to work with me
in sending one to the USA. You see, I'm the President of a
local Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a National Coed Service
Fraternity. We are far from the main stream Fraternity as
one might think of the movie "Animal House". Our
Brothers (men&women) come together to do community service.
Just in the past year or two we named the Penguin as our mascot.
For the many reasons we believe the penguin is very fitting
to be our symbol/mascot. It's a bird that may waddle from
time to time but it can soar (in water) meaning that when
give the chance and opportunity we adapt to our environment.
Also the wonderful relationship between the cycle of birth
the male and female take in bringing a new penguin into the
world is very much like the relationship our brothers are
like here in the chapter. Men and Women work to nuture and
care for the proverbal egg (the chapter) You see, we have
been looking for a penguin that sets itself apart form all
other penguins to represent us. I hope I'm making sense, if
I'm not I'm sorry.
In short I would be honored to work with you to see if we
could obtain a Paper Penguin to become the symbol for our
chapter. A chapter belongs to a organization who's function
is to serve others. I saw that a band has one of your Penguins
and we too would like to do something like that. To obtain
one and use in teaching our community while updating you on
things we are doing here.
I hope I have at least interested you in writting an email
to me. I hope the whole idea does not sound too strange. Well
I guess all I can say now is I look forward to talking with
you.
In Leadership, Friendshp and Service-

Dear
Michael,
Thanks for your e-mail. I haven't replied before now because
I haven't had the chance to get near a computer for about
three weeks now. You see I am currently travelling around
Australia so do not have constant access to a computer like
I did in the UK. Luckily everywhere seems to have an internet
cafe and the exchange rate makes it pretty cheap as well!
You might be interested to know that last week I visited Phillip
Island (south of Melbourne) for the Penguin Parade - I don't
know whether you've heard of it? Anyway it involves a large
number of people gathering along the beach at dusk in cold
conditions to watch hundreds of Little Penguins come home
after a long days fishing. It's a bit commercial but it's
a fantastic way to see these beautiful birds - you are literally
inches away from them as they find their way back to their
burrows. Anyway, back to your original e-mail, yes I think
it would be good for you to show one of my penguins around
your fraternity. The only problem is the fact that I am in
Australia. What I can do is maybe send you one from Oz or
get somebody in the UK to send you one from there. In any
case I'll need an address to send him, or her, to. Please
don't get worried if you don't hear from me quickly it just
depends on when I get a chance to check on my mail. I look
forward to hearing from you soon and I will sort out a community-minded
penguin to come and stay with you guys.
Take care
Guy

Dear
Michael,
Just a quick note to say that I will be sending a penguin
(called Blue) to you shortly.
Anyway, take care and there will be a penguin winging his
way to you soon. Oh, he is actually an Australian paper penguin
that was created in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, that's
why his name is 'Blue'.
See ya,
Guy

Dear
Guy
Blue arrived today in Plattsburgh. From the moment he arrived
he began to talk, I knew he wasn't a shy guy. He opened-up
right away with an 'Ellooo-mate. Since then, he has been going
a mile a minute. I insisted on going out to lunch after hearing
the grumbling in his stomach, he is quite an eater. I stopped
counting at the fourth basket of fish and chips. You would
have thought he was hallow or something. After lunch, it was
time to meet some of the fraternity brothers that I've spoken
of so we went back to my dorm. Unfortunately they weren't
around and Blue was able to get a Birds Eye view of the town
and the mountains since the live on the 8th floor of my building.
Blue start squawking a little, after he saw the Adirondak
Mountains. He said originally he was bit homesick, but knowing
there are mountains around he has been able to settle right
in. We both agreed as well that emailing you might help him
too. Well I let Blue talk for a bit
'Ellooo-mate,
its Blue. The trip over was nice, however I didn't get my
window seat. They ran out of the food and the peanuts on the
plane didn't hold me off at all. It was nice to get some real
food. You would love the view from were I'm sitting right
now. I will have to send some pictures as soon as I can. Well
Mike has to go to a meeting and I'm a bit tired, a little
case of jet lag. I will talk to you soon.
Take Care!
Its
Mike again- Blue has already told you but we will try to get
you some pictures as soon as we can. Well I'm going to make
little spot for Blue to take a nap while I'm at my meeting.
Talk to you soon!

Hi
Michael,
How are you and Blue doing? I hope you are well and staying
out of trouble.
Just thought I'd send you an update to let you know that I am
still alive.
I am currently in Oamaru staying with Dave Houston. I've been
here for quite a while now (off and on) so I hope he doesn't
get sick of me! It's been good to see Dennis again also.
I've been to Moeraki to see the boulders and to the lighthouse
to see Janice Jones who looks after all the sick penguins. One
of her old patients, a yellow-eyed penguin called Inca, still
comes to visit her in the hope that she'll give him some food?
The blue penguins at Oamaru haven't been turning up for their
fans due to a bad storm a few weeks ago. It looks like the storm
forced their food-source out to sea so they had to follow. The
nests here should be full of fat penguins on eggs, but they're
not. They've only just started returning now after an absence
of approximately 17 days! But every time I go down to see them
none come in - everyone down there thinks that I'm a jinx! The
funny thing is that I've seen quite a few rare yellow-eyed penguins
but hardly any
common blue penguins. I'm going down to Dunedin in the next
few days and then on to Invercargill and eventually round to
Milford Sound. I've already met the people at the
Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust and they now have a paper penguin
all of their own called Herbie. Hopefully I'll get them to take
me down to the reserves.
I've already done Australia. I did the south-east and the east
coast and then flew to Darwin and came down through the Northern
Territories and central Australia to Alice Springs and Ayers
Rock.
So I managed to do quite a bit but unfortunately I didn't get
to the west coast - that's another trip!
Anyway, I hope you are looking after yourself and Blue and that
you are having a good time together. I'm looking forward to
seeing and hearing what you've been doing.
Take care of yourself,
Guy
